Старейшая общенациональная ветеранская организация. Основана в 1899 как Организация ветеранов испано-американской войны [United Spanish War Veterans, Spanish-American War]; в 1913 в нее влились еще две ветеранские организации, и она приобрела современное название; в 1936 получила хартию Конгресса [Congress, U.S.]. Членство открыто для мужчин и женщин, принимавших участие в военных действиях за рубежами страны. Женская секция [Ladies Auxiliary] принимает в свои ряды также родственниц ветеранов и женщин, состоявших на действительной службе в вооруженных силах за пределами США, но не принимавших непосредственного участия в военных действиях. Выступает с позиций американского патриотизма и в поддержку укрепления национальной безопасности, оказывает помощь малоимущим ветеранам и инвалидам войны, а также членам их семей. Осуществляет ряд местных социальных программ, в том числе для молодежи, содержит приют для детей ветеранов-инвалидов [VFW National Home] в г. Итон-Рапидсе, шт. Мичиган. Сбор средств часто проводится путем продажи бумажных маков [paper "poppies"], похожих на те, которыми украшали могилы павших солдат первой мировой войны. Издает два ежемесячника: "Ви-эф-даблью мэгэзин" [VFW Magazine] и "Вашингтон экшн рипортер" [Washington Action Reporter]. Около 2,8 млн. членов, свыше 10,5 тыс. местных отделений [post]. На ежегодном съезде [encampment] избирается "главнокомандующий" [commander in chief] и исполнительный орган - Национальный административный совет [National Council of Administration].
